HISTORY OF BLUE STAR MOTHERS

The Blue Star Mothers of America organization was started in Flint, Michigan in 1942, from an idea conceived by Captain George Marines.  The newly founded organization spread across the United States during WWII.
The Blue Star Mothers was part of a national movement to provide care packages to military members serving overseas and assistance to families who encountered hardship as a result of their sons or husbands serving in time of war.
The Blue Star Mothers of America was chartered in 1960 by the U.S. Congress as Veterans' service organization.

BLUE STAR SERVICE BANNERS

The Blue Star Mothers of America is frequently associated with the Blue Star Banner that is displayed in windows.  However, the Blue Star Service Banner was created in 1917 and quickly became an unofficial symbol of a child in military service.  Each blue star indicates one family member serving on active military duty.  The Blue Star Service Banner was seen across the country during WWI and WWII.

Families have revived this tradition to honor the current service of their family members.
